Diabetes and Thyroid Associates, established in 1992, has evolved into one of the largest practices in the Southeast focusing on diabetes, thyroid and other hormonal disorders.

Dr. Mark McClanahan, the founder of the practice has been active in clinical practice as well as clinical research. He was born in and grew up in Abingdon, VA. He is a graduate of the University of Richmond and the Medical College of Virginia (MCV-VCU.) After his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at MCV, he completed an advanced fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Charter Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology. He is an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the James Madison University Physician Assistant (PA) Program and has lectured widely on the subjects of diabetes and osteoporosis and other hormonal topics. He resides in Spotsylvania with his wife Irene.

Scott Urquhart, Certified Physician Assistant, was born in Woodbridge, VA. He joined the practice in 1996. He is a graduate of George Washington University and has served as a Clinical Instructor for the University PA program. He is an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the James Madison University Physician Assistant (PA) Program. He is the past president of the American Society of Endocrine PA's and lectures publishes frequently both on a regional and national level. He resides in Spotsylvania with his wife, Jodi and their teenage twins, Noah and Carley.

In 2015, Dr. McClanahan and Scott Urquhart were recoginized as the Outstanding physican-physician team for the state of Virginia by the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants.
